The air is dry. The wind is heavy, smelling peculiarly of frozen water and cold hands. I sit quietly, unable to stop thinking back to my childhood...of warm winter days-- of eternally blue skies...

In this foreign city, under a halo of frozen rain, I can only wonder-- what would it have been like to grow up here?

It’s strangely lonely.

My thoughts turn outward when a hand rests on my shoulder. I look up and see You’s smile, and all reminiscing returns to clouds of smoke.

“Let’s go,” he says.

Nodding, I get up, leaving thoughts of yesterday behind.

The pinwheel was bright. Hyde had bought it on whim, and stuck it on top of the toy car as decoration. Toddlers, however, choose the strangest things as favorites.

As soon as he saw the blue wings, Hinata gave a great shout—and plucked it off. He began to run around the room, the pinwheel spinning merrily as it caught the wind, clicking softly. “Daddy!” Hinata cried, looking back to Hyde expectantly.

Hyde gave chase.

Later, as Hinata collapsed on the chair in a fit of giggles, Hyde lifted him up--

The cry came from the kitchen.

Hyde, who’d been sitting comfortably, jumped to his feet, alarmed. He put everything down and rushed to the noise.

There, Megumi continued stirring her coffee, nonchalant.

At her feet, Hinata cried playfully, “Stuck!”

Hyde looked dumbfounded to his wife. “Honey, did you hear-- he said stuck!”

Megumi looked at him. “Yes,” she said idly.

Awed and amused at the tiny existence, Hyde couched. “You said stuck.” Hyde smirked.

Hinata pushed the offending bar-chair across the kitchen, forgetting-- for the moment-- his predicament.

His baby was getting more and more clever…

Hyde could only laugh.

Milk went flying as Hinata clutched his drink-box, running and screaming joyfully. He hardly noticed as it spotted his fluffy coat, but when it touched his face, he gave a surprised sort of cough.

Stopping and looking at Hyde, he cried, “Daddy?” Then he shook his hands as if to say, ‘sticky.’

Looking almost as hapless as the son he’d been chasing, Hyde grabbed the toddler in both arms. He called out for backup. “...Megumi...” he sing-songed. “Can you clean up the milk?”

Hinata laughed.

Hyde smiled devilishly, and left the stickiness for Megumi. They had better things to do.

Tetsu and Hyde drove along, speeding down the winding roads. In spite of the late months’ wind, it was nice. The moon smiled down on them, a gentle arc in the sky.

“Hyde?” Tetsu asked after a while.

“Yeah?”

“...nothing. Just wondered if you were asleep…” the words trailed out of his mouth like so many dew drops.

Hyde smiled. “No,” he said simply.

The night air was cool. It touched their faces for what seemed like an age-- so long that it stopped feeling.

But they drove on in continued silence.

The moon was not alone with her smiles.

So there they were, sitting around, some perched and some lounging. Someone had pulled up a table-- plopped down the cake and stuck a lighter in.

Yuki smiled and tasted the candied chestnut. “It’s good,” he proclaimed mildly.

“Yeah, it better be!” Ken joked.

Hyde snorted and reclaimed his lighter. “Merry Christmas.”

Nodding his agreement, Tetsu moved to the center, asking, “Shall we, then?”

When they finished up, retreating figures called again to one another, “Merry Christmas,” and the night wound to a close.

“It looks nice...but kinda out-of-the-way.”

Contemplating that, Gackt looked on. He then let his eyes wander back to the other, and replied, “Some things are better if you have to go looking,” he smiled.

You let it go at that and continued down the stairs. “You can be so strange...”

Gackt moved to follow. When they were side by side again, he simply said, “It’s called ‘love.’”

You couldn’t help but smile.

So! My Japanese teacher is letting us research anything...so I picked Visual Kei.

Why? Because a Japanese friend of mine said something that really surprised me...she thought that L'Arc was Visual Kei. And I was like "No way!" But then I realized I don't have much information on what Visual Kei is (aside from a genre of music in Japan that has a visual element.)

SO yes. I will research what Visual Kei is. Anyone want to add to my list of sources? Either English or Japanese is okay. :)

I may be giving you guys a survey, btw...maybe.

“She was pressed against the window, smooshed to the glass...” he cocks his head to the side. “She had no room to move.”

We’re all snickering now.

“Just squished there.” He nods again, and gives that sly smile. “Just better to be late, sometimes.”

I clutch my baby, rolling my eyes.

Megumi reappears, eyeliner in hand, calling, “Hyde, what--”

Gritting my teeth against mournful cries and over-concerned mothers, I gripe, “Megumi, he’s had too much Doraemon. He needs to play.”

With a look of revelation, Megumi drops her hand. “Oh, good luck, then,” she smiles.

Hinata reaches for Megumi, crying, “Mama--”

“Shh,” I pat his back. “You wanna play outside?”

Sniffling still, Hinata says, “Yah…”

No way can I just sit back and let time take my little boy away. “Ok, let’s go!”

Pulling my hands from my pockets, I ignore him.

From outside the studio, Ken asks. “What’s he doing?”

“Looks like…” Yuki begins, ever calm, “looking for something.”

I squat down to look under the couch. I straighten up and head for the door.

“What’d you lose?” Tetsu asks, guiding me gently.

“I didn’t lose it,” I say slowly, a tiny smile concealing my puzzlement. “I’m pretty sure someone took it.”

Ken hides his laughter.

“You sure?” Tetsu asks.

“Uh-huh.”

“Come on, again?” Ken sing-songs.

“Ass,” I call, laughing.

“Don’t worry, we’ll find it…” and we exit together.

Sitting in a room full of snobby people wasn’t ever my idea of fun. Sitting with production or management isn’t any better, but at least they don’t expect me to, you know, pay attention.

When I do offer a suggestion (my mistake), the returning looks remind me that maybe I should take notes. Then I could use the better ideas for the people under me.

Meanwhile, I let my attention wander to the artwork on the wall. Simple structures carved of honeyed wood stare down at me. Beautiful, odd, and truly artistic.

We can find art anywhere.

Coloring

“These are beeswax crayons,” Hinata informs me with all the solemnity of a four-and-a-half year old.

“No, they’re pastels.”

“Uh-huh.”

Disbelieving, I nod indistinctly. “Uh-huh.”

Hinata begins to draw. The picture unfolds quickly.

After a minute, I ask, “You wanna tell me about it?”

“This is Daddy.” He points to a black-clad person-squiggle, “This is mommy,” he pokes a dress with a face, “And this is me.” He pokes the sun with another pastel and transforms it into a heart. “Do you like it?”

Smiling gently, I reply, “Yes, I do.”

I hope there are many such pictures to come.

Thoughts?

A/n: as to Hyde looking at the color suspiciously...well, he said he was partially color blind, and that he has difficulty seeing some colors (but he's never verified which ones). I have a friend who can't see red and green, and I think this is the most common partial color-blindness (maybe...don't quote me on that...). Also, he collects blue glass (is this his favorite color?) So I assume he sees blue.

Does my reasoning make sense to anyone but me...? XD
